Introductory Workshop

In the introductory qualitative methods workshop, we will learn the basic structure of designing and implementing qualitative research. We will review the basics of five major qualitative methodologies (Case Study, Ethnography, Phenomenology, Grounded Theory, and Narrative Inquiry) used in social science and education, and the common methods used to gather and analyze data. Participants will work in small groups to practice coding textual and/or visual data. *Participants will have an opportunity to draft a project design and receive feedback.

Workshop duration: 3-5 hours

Participant limits: 5-10 people

Advanced Workshop

The advanced qualitative methods workshop will be tailored to participants’ level of experience. A review of major qualitative methodologies and methods used in social science and education may be offered, with a deeper dive into the history and utility of 1-2 particular methodologies. We will consider critical and post-structuralist paradigms as we explore methodological fit and application with research topics of choice. Participants will work in small groups to practice coding textual and/or visual data. Participants will have an opportunity to draft a project design and receive feedback.

Workshop duration: 5 hours

Participant limits: 3-7 people
